Important information about digital pink cards
The law obligates you to produce a Financial Responsibility Card (FRC, or “pink card”) in certain circumstances. It is your responsibility to ensure that you can produce your pink card. Factors such as lack of cellular service, power interruptions, or law enforcement procedures may prevent effective use of this electronic form. If you choose to provide electronic proof of insurance to the police or other lawful authority, you may be required to provide your device to a police officer or other authorized person, who may take temporary custody of your device for the purposes of verifying the insurance coverage (in the same way that they would treat a paper card).
Square One offers lock screen capability for viewing pink cards through Apple and Google Wallet. This may reduce the risk of other people viewing the electronic insurance card from gaining access to other information on your mobile device. However, it is still your responsibility to activate any privacy settings on your phone and ensure your mobile device supports privacy settings such as lock screen functionality.
Your device could be damaged during inspection, and you may be responsible for all damage.
If you are travelling outside of your home province, electronic proof of insurance may not be approved in other jurisdictions.
If someone is using your vehicle with your consent, you may still be required by law to have proof of auto insurance in the vehicle. You may need to share or otherwise transfer a version of the electronic proof of insurance to the person driving your vehicle, or else have a paper version of the pink card inside the vehicle.
Because one or more of the above-noted factors may come into play, you may wish to carry a paper copy as backup. Should you want a paper copy, you are responsible for printing the pink card provided to you by Square One.
