N/A out of 5. That’s how customers rate Square One Insurance Services after writing N/A reviews. And with an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, people clearly love the way we’re changing tenant insurance.

Digital platform

With Square One, you can get a quote, buy a policy and even submit a claim – all online, from the comfort of your own home. Quotes and policies are managed through your online account or mobile app, but if you need help, expert assistance from one of our licensed insurance agents is just a webchat or phone call away.

Superior protection

All policies from Square One are comprehensive (all-risk). This represents the highest level of protection currently available in Canada. We make it easy for you to protect your things from common perils (such as water damage and theft). And, we protect your belongings on a replacement cost basis, which means you’re covered for the full cost of replacing your stolen or damaged stuff.

Liability coverage included

Tenant insurance policies from Square One also protect against accidental personal and property damage to others. So, whether your neighbour slips on your porch or you hit a stranger with your golf ball on vacation, you can rest assured that Square One has you covered.

Personalized coverage

All policies protect most common personal property items including laptops, smartphones and furniture. If you own specialty property (such as bicycles or fine arts) you can also add coverage to your policy. That way, you only pay to insure what you actually own. And, with standard deductible options ranging from $250 to $5,000, you’ll build the policy that fits your life.

Need to make a claim?

Making a claim with Square One is easy. In fact, most of the process can be done online. You’ll get your own dedicated adjuster to work with you from start to finish to make sure you’re back on your feet in no time. And, Square One pays out on over 90% of all claims submitted.

Low-maintenance

We’re all about making things easy for you. You can choose to pay monthly or annually, and you can cancel your policy any time with no penalty (though we’re pretty sure you won’t want to). If you move, your policy moves with you. If you buy a home someday, switching to a homeowner’s policy is a breeze.

Resources for Toronto residents

Provided below are some basic resources for those of you who may be new to Toronto. These resources range from a background on the city to tips on planning a move.

Learning about Toronto

Toronto, a metropolitan city in the province of Ontario, has a population of 2,615,000 people, which makes it the largest city in Canada. Additionally, with a population of 5.5 million, the Greater Toronto Area is the highest populated metropolitan area in Canada.

Toronto is known for its prominent music, theatre, movie, and television industries especially since it’s the headquarters for Canada’s national broadcast network. It has a land area of 1,655 square kilometers, making it the largest Canadian municipality, and the 97th most densely populated city in the world.

Toronto Island, a popular beach resort in downtown Toronto, offers amusement parks, picnic areas, and wading pools. You can travel the Centreville Park by pony express or train and visit Franklin’s Children Garden, a popular play spot. These islands are home to the largest urban-free community in North America, thanks to an extensive bike sharing network.

The Casa Loma mansion, built in 1900, is an architectural beauty that still manages to use modern day technology. It has secret passage ways, breathtaking towers, massive staircases, an eight hundred foot tunnel, and a 5 acre garden.

Planning a move

Before your move, consider following the steps below to make the entire process as easy as possible.

  • Select your movers: First, decide whether or not you’re going to hire a moving company. See what needs to be moved from your home, and the help that would already be available to you. If you have lots of willing friends and family, moving without a company will save you money. However, if you have any large items such as a piano, hiring a moving company may be a good idea. While there are several moving companies in Toronto, The Moving Brothers, Cargo Cabbie, and Rent-a-son are common choices.

  • Get necessary supplies: The next step is to gather the supplies you’ll need for when it comes time to pack and move. These include boxes, tape, labels, bubble wrap or other specialty packaging, and a dolly. The average person can expect to spend up to $250 on supplies which can vary depending on the size of your family.

  • Pack smart: Remember that you’ll want essential items unpacked immediately, and ready to use that night. It’s no fun going through multiple boxes for only one or two items. You should keep the essential items within easy reach so they can be unpacked first. These commonly include, utensils, clothing, pots and pans, bedding, and curtains.

  • Keep your receipts: If you moved closer to work by at least 40 kilometers, the Canada Revenue Agency allows you to deduct some moving expenses from your income. Visit the CRA to learn more.

Getting orientated

Now that you’ve moved into your new residence, you’ll need to set up any arrangements that you may have used at your previous home.

  • Obtain or update your driver’s license and car insurance: Now that you’re a new Toronto resident, you’ll want to update or obtain a new drivers license to reflect your new address. While there are several different options, PC Auto Insurance and Allstate Auto Insurance are common options.

  • Update your mailing address: Now that you’ve moved addresses, you’ll need to update your account and set up mail forwarding through Canada Post to ensure you don’t miss any important letters or packages. Visit Canada Post’s website to get started.

  • Find local schools, daycares, and health professionals: If you have children, you should find both a local school or daycare. Because daycares in Toronto are popular, it’s important to enroll your children as soon as possible. Visit the local school directory and daycare options to learn more. NNow that you’ve moved, chances are you’ll need to change your doctor, dentist, chiropractor, or other health professional, including veterinarians. Visit The Province of Ontario to find services and resources.

  • Update your banking information: If the bank you were using prior to your move does not operate in Toronto, you need to find a bank or credit union that does. While there are several different options, the most common in Toronto are RBC, TD, and BMO.

Setting up your home

Once you’ve moved into your new home, you’ll need to set up different accounts and think about some services to complete your move.

  • Cable and phone service providers: It’s almost essential to setup your cable and phone service once you’ve moved to a new residence. There are several different options available in Toronto, however the more common companies are VMedia, Zazeen, and Rogers.

  • Hydro, electricity, and gas providers: Just like cable and phone services, you can’t operate your home without necessary accounts with hyrdo, electricity, and gas companies. While there are several options available in Toronto, RiteRate and Hydro One are common choices. If you want to compare other providers, EnergyRates.ca is a good resource. It’s important to note that some municipalities may supply utilities to their residents themselves.

  • Home insurance providers: You’ve just moved into a home, it’s possibly your biggest investment to date and you want to make sure it’s protected! Visit the Square One home insurance page to find out which policy best suits your needs and to receive an online quote.

  • Landscaping companies: After moving into your new home, if there are any major changes you’d like to make to your lawn it may be best to hire a landscaping company. There are hundreds of options in Toronto, but Green Apple, M.E Contracting, and Greenbloom Landscaping are common choices.

Making repairs to your home

With any new home, you need to be prepared in case something does go wrong. It’s a good idea to have a resource readily available for finding companies that can offer quick repairs.

  • Plumbing: While there are hundreds of different options when it comes to plumbing repairs in Toronto, this list of companies will help kickstart your search.

  • Restoration and renovation: If your new home needs any repairs or upgrades, it’s a good idea to check with a restoration or renovation company to make sure you’ve found the root causes to any problems. Check out Square One’s list of restoration contractors as well as a list of Toronto renovation companies to help start your search. Additionally, feel free to browse though Square One’s home improvement resource center to learn more.

  • Electrical: Loss of power is one of the last thing’s you want to deal with once settled into a new home. If the problem isn’t linked to your electricity provider, you should contact an electrician. While there are several different options in Toronto, HC Electrical, Astron Electric, and Hi-lite Electric are common choices.

  • Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning: If you ever notice that your new home is either too hot or too cold, it may be due to an HVAC issue which you’d want to get looked at immediately, or alert your landlord. Again, while there are several options in Toronto, AtlasCare, Belyea Brothers, and Laird and Son are popular choices.
